studio |
Nice Studio - A charming top-floor studio apartment in a pedestrianised
street, in the heart of the Old Town of Nice.
Rue St Augustin is a picturesque corner of ‘Vieux
Nice’, which so captivated the artist Dufy that
he immortalised it in his painting ‘Le mai a Nice 1930’.
Despite being very central, the loudest noises are the bells of
nearby St Martin’s church.
The studio appartment makes an ideal year-round base for exploring
the delights of Nice and the French Riviera,
or venturing further afield to the ‘perched’ villages
and spectacular mountains
– just an easy bus, train or car journey inland. |

Nice
Studio,
which is on the third floor, has its own private, south-east
facing terrace, 15ft x 4ft, which effectively acts as
a second living area for most of the year.
It has a table and four chairs, and an outside light means you
can sit out, and eat or read after dark.
If you listen hard, you may just be able to hear strains from
a classical music concert escaping from the Chapel of
La Providence opposite.

Studio - interior dining area |
Nice Studio measures
15ft x 15ft and is simply furnished in a traditional style.
The original beamed ceiling and terracotta-tiled
floor add to the overall character, and with two double
French doors leading out on to the terrace, the whole space has
a light and airy feel.
There’s a double sofa bed, and an electric heater for the
odd cold spell. Bring some of your favourite CDs or audio-tapes
to play. |
Nice
Studio - kitchen area |
The
Nice Studio kitchen area provides everything you
need for everyday cooking. There’s a fridge with freezer compartment,
a two-ring gas hob and a microwave. There’s also a kettle,
toaster and a coffee-making machine. Cutlery, plates, pots, frying
pan and cooking utensils are provided. The studio was converted
about five years ago, when an ensuite shower room
was installed, with basin, WC and electric heater. |

Studio -fruit market
|
The
Old Town has a market in the famous Cours Salaya:
Fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers on Tuesdays to Saturdays, and
antiques on a Monday. There is also a daily fish market in Place
St Francois. You’ll find the Old Town full of interesting
little shops, many of which have not changed for generations. There
are also numerous restaurants, catering for all appetites and pockets.
The accent is on Provencal cuisine, with an Italian influence. |
Nice
Studio - view of the bay
|
Nice Studio is less than five minutes’ walk from the beach
and the famous Promenade des Anglais. Climb the
Castle Hill for a spectacular view of the Bay. It’s the same
distance again on foot to the colourful Port area, with its fishing
boats and luxury yachts. There are also plenty of fashion boutiques
within easy walking distance.
If it’s culture you’re after, visit the numerous galleries,
museums and churches. There’s also the Opera House,
the Nice National Theatre, and the characterful
Mercury cinema in Place Garibaldi, which is always
showing at least one English language film. |
Nice
Studio - the mountains |
If you don’t want to stay put in Nice,
you can easily get up and down the coast to Cannes,
Monte Carlo, Monaco, or pop over
the border to Italy. Or you could change scene altogether and explore
the magical mountains just a few miles inland from Nice: see Grasse
and Vence.
Buses and trains also take you deep into the heart of the mountains,
where you can visit the medieval ‘perched’ villages
or just walk for hours without meeting a soul. If you get so entranced
that you miss the last bus or train back, you can always stay over
in a village auberge. |
